Fall/Winter

Wow, it's been a long time since we've posted. We haven't had enough light to hold any more build days, but we'll be re-layering most of the ramps and painting in the coming weeks. Pedal Power will be coming by soon to stencil up the ramps and beautify the park. Thanks to Ruth Plummer and the Parks & Rec. the park will be lit from 4pm-9pm until the Winter freeze begins. Take advantage of the Fall weather and get out and ride/skate!

The Park is Done...

Well all the ramps are complete. Now it's time for the dirty work, fine tuning the oldest of the ramps that were built back in April, painting the entire park with sealant, and putting up some safety railings. Last night was a very successful build night and we got a ton accomplished. Thanks to all the kids for busting their butts well into the night, especially now that school has begun. A huge thank you to the adult volunteers for working swiftly, but safely, to get a ton done last night and staying till 9PM to do so! We've made a lot of progress this year guys...awesome!!!

Keep your eyes peeled on Friday, the News Bulletin newspaper is supposed to have a brief article about the park and our generous sponsors, Parks & Rec. and Pedal Power.

Build Night

We'll be building at the Belltown Skatepark Wednesday from 6-dark. Due to people being on vacation, and a rain out last week, we haven't worked at the park in 3 weeks. We're planning on completing the mini ramp.

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Update!

Wow, it's been a long time since we posted something. People have been on vacation, we've been getting rained on, and it's Summer time! The new mini ramp at the park in under construction and should be finished by the end of August. We'll be applying more of the "Pedal Power Maroon" sealant to protect the park from the elements and keep stuff dry. Please join us at our next build night...check back for details!

Park Progress: July 15th

Last night's build night got off to a slow start, but once we got the ball rolling....well the paint rollers rolling...we made some great progress. We relayered the the chewed up base sheets on the wedge and vert wall and Steve build a new kicker to pair up with the elevated grind box we built a few weeks ago. We finally cracked the sealant cans and coated about 1/2 of the park in the "Pedal Power maroon" paint. The place looks great! Thanks to all that helped out, we appreciate the hard work!

Next week we're hoping to relayer the remaining damaged sheets on various ramps, finish painting the remaining ramps, and hopefully start on the skeleton of the mini ramp. Matt from Pedal Power will be stopping by in the near future to help Tony and Steve stencil the ramps with some PDL PWR shop logos.

Building & Painting TONIGHT!

We'll be at the park from 6-9 PM today working on the framework of the new mini ramp and getting some of the existing ramps coated with the sealant. Come on down and lend a helping hand!

NO BUILD NIGHT July 7th

Due to conflicting schedules of some of the committee members, and the extreme heat, we're going to reschedule this weeks build day to Wednesday, July 14th. Go swimming!!!

BUILD NIGHT TONIGHT

UPDATE: 3 PM - We've decided that we are going to demo the current mini ramp as it is very weathered and rotting. We'll be constructing a new mini with 4' transitions over the course of the next 2 build nights. Tonight our focus will be tearing down the old mini and starting to frame out the new trannies.

We will be at the park tonight re-layering the mini ramp, working on the new manny pad and grind box, and hopefully getting some paint (wood sealant) applied. A fresh wood delivery is being dropped off today and hopefully we'll have a good turnout now that the temps have dropped and the humidity is gone.

Moving forward we'll be having build days every 2 weeks over the Summer...or as needed. Everybody has busy work and play schedules and lots of vacations are planned. We've made great progress in the past 2 months and with proper maintenance and care from the local skaters & riders the park should be running mint all year long! Thanks to everyone that lent a helping hand to get the park up and running, we greatly appreciate your help!

June 23rd Build Night CANCELLED

Due to the incoming rain, thunderstorms, and humidity we're going to cancel this weeks build night. 12 solid hours of rain is going to get the wood far too wet to work with and there is no way it's going to dry out with the humidity levels projected to be around 90%. We're hoping to build Wednesday and Thursday next week if possible...we'll see how things turn out.

Build Night: June 17

Due to the incoming rain on Wednesday we're pushing this weeks build night to Thursday. We'll be re-layering the mini ramp, installing coping on it, and beginning work on the new grind ledges and manual pad. Please show up and lend a helping hand, we'll be at the park 5-9 PM.

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Build Night: June 9th

BUILD NIGHT CANCELLED DUE TO THE INCOMING RAIN! Rescheduled for next Wednesday, June 16th 5-9PM!

We'll be having a brief skatepark committee meeting at the park tomorrow at 6pm to discuss park progress, additional ramps, and fund raising efforts for the Summer. After the meeting we'll be installing sheet metal bases on all the ramps to make them smooth for the skaters and we're hoping to re-layer and install coping on the mini ramp. The park is coming along great, but we can always use some more helping hands!

Remember, the lights are on till 10pm...there is always a time for a session after building!

Park Update: June 3rd

We had a small crew show up last night to help get the 8' quarter/mini-vert wall built. Thanks to those that spent the time to lend a helping hand. We're hoping to install sheet metal at the base of all the ramps in the next few days to make them smoother for both riders and skaters.

We have to send a huge THANK YOU out to Gary and Bill at Pedal Power Bike Shop for their very generous donation to the skatepark committee this week. The funds donated will be used to add additional ramps to the park, purchase sheet metal base plates, and paint the park with a weather proof sealant.

Next Wednesday, June 9th, we will be having a meeting at the skatepark from 5-9 PM to discuss additional ramps we're planning to build, modifications to existing ramps, and the Strawberry Fest on June 12th. After the meeting we're planning on re-layering the mini ramp, installing coping on it, and getting it painted. Turnout has been very weak at the last 3 build days, please spread the word about this next one! If nobody shows up to help, nothing new is getting built at the park!!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Build Night: June 2nd

We will be building at the Belltown Skatepark tonight from 5-9 PM. We just received a generous donation from Pedal Power Bike Shop to help us purchase some more materials, paint for the park, etc. Come on down and lend a helping hand!

NO BUILD DAY THIS WEEK

Due to the threat of heavy rains and thunderstorms and the 90+ degree temperatures we're going to postpone this weeks build day. We can't paint if it is going to rain and we don't want people getting sizzled in the scorching heat. We'll be building and hopefully painting on June 2nd.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Build Day: May 26th

So here is the deal...we're supposed to be painting the park tomorrow and yet again it looks like thunderstorms are going to roll through late in the day. Obviously, rain=no painting! We can't catch a break here! If we are lucky enough to get the painting done, THE PARK WILL BE CLOSED ALL DAY THURSDAY while the ramps dry. Please spread the word! Please come out and lend a helping hand 5-9 PM tomorrow.

BUILD DAY POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN

Due to the impending rain we will not be building at the Skate Park this week. All building and painting will resume next Wednesday the 26th 5pm - dark.

The building thus far has gone very well as you can see. However we could really use your help! Please come ready to work next week. If you have a cordless drill bring it with you (don't forget to charge the batteries) Don't know much about building.....that's ok.....we need help moving wood, we need help assisting those cutting wood, picking up trash, etc...

Remember, this is your park and all our volunteers have been working very hard (and will continue to do so) to make this the best possible park that it can be. So please come down and lend a helping hand! Spread the word please!!!

TONIGHT

Due to very windy conditions and the threat of overnight temps below freezing we will not be painting the park tonight. We've been advised that the sealant may not cure correctly if the weather stays so cold and with the winds blowing we're likely to get sand, pine needles, and other debris sticking to the wet paint. We will plan on painting next week.

We're still going to be at the park from 5-9 PM but our focus will be building some new ramps..and fine tuning a few others. Please come down and lend a helping hand.

Friday, May 7, 2010

SKATEPARK CLOSED TUESDAY

We'll be painting the skatepark on Monday with a sealant that takes 24-36 hours to cure. THE PARK WILL BE CLOSED ALL DAY TUESDAY while the ramps dry. Please spread the word! In addition to painting, a crew will be beginning to make progress on some new ramps. Please come out and lend a helping hand 5-9 PM Monday, May 10th.

Bank to Wall/Sub

Thanks to everyone that came out tonight to help us complete the new bank and wallride/sub-wall. It was fun getting the ramps done somewhat early leaving us time to have a little session on the new ramp. We're hoping to build again Monday focusing on a 8-10'vert wall, box jump, new 5' quarter pipe, and fine tuning the existing ramps a bit. Mark your calendars! Hope to see you at the park then!!

Our Goal

We received an e-mail yesterday from a town resident asking what exactly our goal was? and are we actually doing any fund raising?

The ultimate goal of the East Hampton Skatepark Committee is to get a permanent park built in town...possibly a cement park. Currently, Parks & Rec. allows us to use the old handball court at Sears Park for 3 seasons to house a wooden skatepark. We are required to remove the ramps and put them in storage for the Winter months. Below is a diagram that was featured in the Sears Park Master Plan that was debuted last Summer. Ideally, this is what we'd be looking to achieve.

Due to the tremendous effort we've been putting into the 2010 park set-up, building news ramps on a weekly basis, we have not bee actively raising funds over the last few months. The committee will have a booth at the Strawberry Fields Fest on June 12th selling baked goods and our skatepark fundraiser t-shirts. When the 2010 park set-up is complete in the next few weeks we'll again move our focus to fund raising.

Build Day: May 5th

Wednesday, May 5th
5-9:30 PM

We're hoping to have two teams working to get the fun box complete and begin construction on the large wedge ramp that will be placed between the 2 quarter pipes on the side of the park that butts against the tennis courts. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN WORKING (Not hanging out and staring at people do all the work) please come down!

Fun Box Built

We got the majority of the fun box complete this evening. We'll be adding a 4 stair set on the backside and a hubba ledge. Slow but steady, we're making progress! Parks & Rec. had the fence top safety capping installed for us this week. Looks great and serves a very practical purpose. Thanks Ruth!

2010 Rough Layout

With generous donations from Ruth Plummer at East Hampton Parks & Rec. and Pedal Power Bicycle Shop we're making some good progress at the park. We've been doing some planning and have developed a rough draft of what the park will likely look like when completed in the next month or so. The ramps will be painted maroon and gold, the Pedal Power colors, to help protect them from the elements and give them some character.

NOTE: Some elements may change and this isn't drawn to scale!

Work Horses

Thanks to the people that came out and helped build down at the park today. A HUGE THANKS to Steve Morse who spent 9 hours of his day off down at the park working his tail off! We were able to get two 5' quarter pipes with decks and safety railings built and we started framing out the 8' x 6' deck of the fun box. We're making progress and the park is looking good!

Next work day is Thursday, April 29th from 5-9 PM.
We'll be painting the ramps so the park will be CLOSED ALL DAY THURSDAY FOR DRYING! Spread the word!

Building Today!

Steve M. will be down at the park around noon today to start construction on some new ramps and several other will be showing up after school and work. We'll be building till dark tonight. Come on down and lend a helping hand!

Heavy Traffic

The skatepark is already receiving heavy traffic and it's only been up for a few weeks with just a few ramps in place. Here's a few our our volunteers getting rad at the park...

Did Work!

Thanks to everyone that came out tonight and busted their butt helping us get the park cleaned up, the grind box re-layered, and the street spine built. We're only 3 working days in and the park is looking better already! We'll be building a few nights next week...the lights are on till 10!

No Ramp Building Saturday

Rainy and temps in the 40's Saturday, we're not building! Stay tuned for next weeks build date.

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Ramp Building Update

It appears we may be getting rain on Friday and Saturday so the build day for this weekend is likely postponed. To make up for lost time we'll be meeting Thursday the 15th from 5-dark and one day next week to get ramps built. If Saturday ends up drying out I'm sure a few of us will show up at the park at some point.

Moving forward we'd like the stress the point that "build days" are to get ramps built and tidy up the park, they aren't ramp sessions. We appreciate people coming out to show support for the park, but it's too dangerous having riders/skaters weaving in and out of people using drills, saws, extension cords, etc.

No skating or riding will be permitted while ramp building is taking place at the park.

Thanks for understanding.

Safety First

Thanks to Ruth Plummer and East Hampton Parks & Rec. the fences at the skatepark will be capped with a safety product similar to the one pictured below. This is going to be a huge plus for people skating/riding the mini ramp which has the fence bordering it on 2 sides. Nobody likes to be impaled!

Ramp Moving

The skatepark committee and some volunteers met on Monday to get the ramps out of storage and down to the skatepark site. Tristan Bush of East Hampton was kind enough to donate his mini ramp to the park, which took some serious man power and a huge trailer to move. Thanks to everyone that came out and helped us muscle the ramps apart and down to the park. The ramps need some TLC, but the park should be looking pretty good in the next few weeks!

2010 Belltown Skatpark A Go!

The 2010 Belltown Skatepark will gradually begin to be set-up down at Sears Park for the 2nd year in a row. A huge thanks to Ruth Plummer and the folks at the East Hampton Parks & Rec. for allowing us to use the space again and for making a generous donation of wood and materials to help us build the park bigger and better this year.
